A packaged unit is an all-in-one heating and cooling system. The packaged unit will either sit on a rooftop or on the side of a building. Packaged units are used for nearly all commercial buildings; such as schools, shopping centers, and hospitals. These units are designed best for homes or businesses that do not have the room indoors for either a furnace, coil, air handler, or for cooling and heating a large space. They offer various types of systems, such as air conditioning, heat pumps, air conditioning with gas option, or even a dual heat system.
When measuring for efficiency there are several different ratios to go by. During the cooling months the efficiency is rated by the IEER rating (Integrated Energy Efficiency Ratio). With a heat pump unit in heating mode the efficiency is determined by a CoP rating (Co-efficient of Performance). Another rating used is the AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) that is used in the heating mode with a gas system.
